Psychological Measures To Keep You Safe As A Captive

Hello everyone, and welcome to the Survival Prep Shop. I’m TK and I’m here to share insights that I’ve gathered personally along the way — let’s grow our preparedness journey together. Today, we’re diving deep into what to do if you ever find yourself in a captive situation, focusing on survival and the importance of staying alive through strategic behavior and cooperation.

If you ever find yourself in a hostage situation, the paramount goal is survival. Let’s discuss some simple precautions that may significantly increase your chances of getting out alive and well.

First and foremost, if they don’t find you, you won’t face immediate danger. Try to find a safe place to hide, ideally one that shields you from any potential gunfire and remains out of sight from the hostage taker.

If hiding is not an option, avoid confronting the captor, especially if they are armed. Remember, they might primarily be after monetary gains and could be open to negotiations. Trying to overpower them without preparation can lead to dire consequences.

Avoid attempting to play the hero, as this approach is likely to fail. Instead, treat your captor with the utmost respect and only speak when spoken to. Over-acting can make you seem deceitful, which might provoke hostility.

Keep calm throughout the ordeal. As long as you don’t appear threatening, neither the captor nor the eventual rescue teams will likely see you as a target.

When a rescue operation begins, ensure you are visibly non-threatening. The rescue team needs to quickly assess who is a victim and who is a threat. At their entry, your best move is to ‘hit the deck’ to avoid crossfires.

During the captivity, stay observant. Note details about the captors – their appearance, weapons, and any names or codewords they use. This information could be invaluable to law enforcement officers if the captors escape.

Compliance can be your best strategy. Follow the captor’s instructions – if they tell you to move or stand, do it promptly. Resistance is likely to escalate to violence.

Work towards developing a rapport with your captor. Showing respect and compliance can reduce their hostility towards you. However, be ready to defend yourself if you determine that your life is in imminent danger, despite your efforts to connect on an emotional level.

It’s been a pleasure to have your company in these words. If they’ve sparked even a single idea or solution for you, it’s a victory in my book. Thank you for sharing your time with me.

Thanks again.
