If you’re new to survivalist training, you might be wondering what a bug out bag is. Essentially, it’s a collection of critical items you’d need to survive if you had to leave home quickly due to a disaster. You should pack your gear in a durable backpack or nylon bag.
Here’s what your bug out bag should include:
- Lightweight, long-lasting food such as freeze-dried meals or MREs sufficient for at least three days.
- At least a three-day water supply for each person, plus items to collect and purify additional water, like water purification tablets and portable containers.
- A basic cooking set for preparing meals, and means to boil water.
- Enough clothing for two days plus the outfit you’re wearing. Include long pants and long-sleeved shirts regardless of the season to protect against pests and cold nights, along with extra socks, underwear, and sturdy hiking boots.
- Rain gear like a poncho, which can double as a temporary shelter if necessary. Also pack a hat, sunglasses, and a bandana for additional protection and utility.
- Shelter components such as a tent or tarp with cording, a sleeping bag or pad, and emergency blankets.
- Personal hygiene supplies, a comprehensive first aid kit, fire starters like waterproof matches, and a solar-powered flashlight.
- Essential tools including fishing gear, a knife, multitool, emergency radio, solar power cell phone charger, sturdy gloves, a small axe, folding shovel, and duct tape.
- Important personal documents, items for entertainment, and a weapon for personal protection.
