Hello everyone, and welcome to the Survival Prep Shop. I’m TK and I’m thrilled to dive into our latest exploration of survival tactics. Today, we’re focusing on a critical component often overlooked in bug out plans: physical maps. Let’s enhance our preparedness together by understanding why having up-to-date, detailed maps is as crucial as any other survival tool.
When the time comes to enact your bug out plan, relying solely on technology like GPS can be a grave mistake. During major crises, technological infrastructures may fail, leaving your digital navigation tools nonfunctional. Without a firm mental map of every twist and turn in your local and state roads, your escape routes could be severely compromised.
To prevent such a scenario, it’s essential to include detailed maps in your bug out bag. You’ll need a localized map that includes all potential routes—not just the ones you frequently travel. The Rand McNally 2017 Road Atlas, which covers the United States, Canada, and Mexico in great detail, is an excellent choice. Chaos and unfamiliar terrain could render your usual paths nearly unrecognizable; a comprehensive map will keep you oriented and moving towards safety.
Remember, disasters like flooding can block primary roads. You must be prepared with alternative routes, and a detailed map can point you to lesser-known roads that might be your only option to circumvent natural barriers. Topographic maps are invaluable here as they reveal how to navigate around physical obstacles presented by the natural landscape.
In some cases, escaping danger might require traveling much further than anticipated, possibly even crossing state lines. For such circumstances, state-specific maps like the 2018 Rand McNally EasyFinder® Midsize Road Atlas can be lifesaving. These maps will not only guide you along the way but also highlight essential landmarks and natural water sources—crucial information if you need to camp or replenish water supplies.
As this conversation comes to an end, I hope to have given you more to ponder on your preparedness journey. Your readership is much appreciated, and I can’t wait to share more with you soon. Thanks again.
